St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church –¬†Church Construction¬† in Canonsburg, PA

Canonsburg, PA – Near Canon-McMillan High School, a neighboring church body is gearing up for another major building upgrade.

Almost 100 years since its inception, St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church is eager to meet the needs for growth and development, as well as keep its doors wide open to the community.

“We are just doing what we are supposed to do. That is, calling and inviting all” voiced their priest, Father Joseph Oleynik.

Three years ago, the church completed a renovation to address major maintenance items and improvements, including a newly constructed fellowship hall, classrooms, air conditioning, and a paved parking lot.

This week, nine years of planning will ignite phase two of their expansion, which involves a new entrance, library, conference room, administrative office, and renovated multi-purpose room.

“We look forward to having a comfortable and inviting vestibule in which we can welcome others to St. John’s,” said Myra Oleynik, co-chair of the capital campaign committee.

Placing their trust in Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects, the church partnered with the firm and its local Principal, Loren Wright, who opened the firm’s Pittsburgh office in 2006.

Wright commented, “We’ve had an upbeat relationship with St. John’s from the beginning and have worked well together to reorganize and maximize their building footprint, while protecting its beautiful historic value.”

Wright’s other notable projects include several area churches, a student center for The Kiski School, and various stores for Giant Eagle Market District, including Bethel park, Settler’s Ridge, Shadyside, and Wexford.

Construction of phase two will be handled by Nello Construction Company, who was chosen for their long background in church building as well as their local presence in Canonsburg.

Among a list of Canonsburg churches that date back to the early 1900s, St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church has old roots but is planting seeds for the future.

The name of their building campaign, “Continuing to Light the Way,” expresses their calling for multiple ministry areas, including community outreach and building strong youth programs.

“What we are doing now is not for today but for future generations,” explained Kip Yarosh, the President of St. John’s Parish.
